At Dr. Malay Aparnath, we utilize the latest diagnostic technologies to accurately assess respiratory conditions. Your evaluation starts with a full Pulmonology evaluation followed by a variety of tests, including pulmonary function tests and imaging studies, to provide precise diagnoses. We understand that timely diagnosis is crucial for an effective diagnostic and treatment.

Screening means testing for a disease even when there are no symptoms or history of that disease. Doctors recommend a screening test to find a disease early, and the prevention of further damage to your respiratory system.

Dr. Aparnath recommends screening tests for lung cancer which is low-dose computed tomography (also called a low-dose CT scan, or LDCT). During an LDCT scan, you lie on a table and an x-ray machine uses a low dose (amount) of radiation to make detailed images of your lungs. The scan only takes a few minutes and is not painful.

Who should be screened?

The US Preventive Services Task Force (Task Force) recommends yearly lung cancer screening with LDCT for people who:

  • Have a 20 pack-year or more smoking history, and
  • Smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years, and
  • Are between 50 and 80 years old.

A pack-year is smoking an average of one pack of cigarettes per day for one year. For example, a person could have a 20 pack-year history by smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years.

Sleep Studies & Treatment

Treating Asthma Effectively

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when a person’s upper airway becomes blocked, causing pauses in breathing during sleep. While OSA can affect anyone, it is more common in people who are overweight or obese. Now FDA approved works by activating receptors of hormones secreted from the intestine (glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)) to reduce appetite and food intake. By reducing body weight, studies show that FDA approved medications also improves OSA.

If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, Dr. Aparnath, can help. We refer comprehensive diagnostic testing referrals to sleep centers to diagnose conditions such as sleep apnea. Our tailored treatment approaches aim to enhance your sleep quality and overall health, ensuring restful nights.

The main types of sleep apnea are:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax and block the flow of air into the lungs
  • Central sleep apnea (CSA), which occurs when the brain doesn't send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing
  • Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, also known as complex sleep apnea, which happens when someone has OSA — diagnosed with a sleep study — that converts to CSA when receiving therapy for OSA

If you think you might have sleep apnea; Treatment can ease your symptoms and might help prevent heart problems and other complications.

FDA Clears First Oral Appliance for Severe Sleep Apnea

For the first time, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared oral devices that treat severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These devices offer an alternative to more common sleep apnea treatments, like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and surgery.
